Vasantha Utsavam at the famous temple of Lord Annamalaiyar at Thiruvannamalai

The grand annual celebrations for the 10-day spring festival (Vasantha Utsavam) starts from today (Saturday, 29th April) and concludes on 8th May.

It is celebrated in 5 or 6 minor shrines dedicated to Devi or Subramanya.

The ceremonies performed in 10 days – Pandhakkal Muvurtham, Yagasalai with 2 kalasams representing Soma and Kama, and Kappu,

The principal and most attractive feature of the festival are the 10 splendid nightly tours of the god Somaskanda around the Makila trees with music and dance accompaniments.

On the 10th day which falls on the full moon, the gods will go on a tirthavari procession to Ayyamkulam (ritual of the gods taking a holy dip in a sacred pool) and on their return will take place the burning of the Kama enacted in the form of an elaborate divine charade.

From the Tamil calendar month of Chithirai in the year Hevilambi. On the occasion of New Moon Day (Amavasai) on Pradosham, special abhishekhams was performed for the Periya Nandhi in the 5th corridor of the temple of Lord Annamalaiyar.

Special adornment was done on the Periya Nandhi. Special Deepaaradhanai was performed on this Nandhi.

Sani Pradosham at the famous Thiruvannamalai temple

On Sani Pradosham day, special abhishekhams was performed on the sacred Nandhis (the special carriage of the sacred bull of Lord Arunachaleeswarar) – Periya Nandhi, Chinna Nandhi, Kodimaram Nandhi, Adhikara Nandhi, and Saravilakku Nandhi.

Special Deeparadhanai was performed.

The deity of the Paradosha Nayakar was taken on a procession on the special carriage of Golden Bull (thanga rishabha vahanam) on the 3rd corridor of the Lord Thirvannamalaiyar temple.

Maha Kumbhabhishekam at Annamalaiyar Temple gets completed

The grand Maha Kumbhabhishekam of the famous Annamalaiyar Temple with the main deity Lord Annamalaiyar and his consort Sri Unnamulaiamman, which commenced on 6th February, was completed on Sunday, 26th March with Mandalabhishekham after a period of 48 days.

On Saturday, 25th March, the Mandalalabhishekham started with Mudhal Kala Pooja in the night. On Sunday, 26th March, the Irandam Kala Pooja was performed in the morning at the temple in the presence of the Joint Commissioner Ms C. Haripriya.

Pooranagathi and Deeparadhanai were performed for the Temple Domes (Kalasams) in the 2nd corridor of the temple.

After this, the Sivachariyars carried the sacred pots and special Abhishekas were performed in the 1st Corridor of the temple for the festival deities of Lord Arunachaleeswarar, His Consort Sri Unnamulaiyamman, and Lord Ganapathy, and Lord Muruga with His Consort Valli and Deivanai.

The special religious event in Lord Annamalaiyar temple in the Tamil month of Masi

The day when the star Makam falls in the Tamil calendar month Masi is considered a very sacred day and celebrated as Masi Makam all over the temples in Tamil Nadu.

It is especially more fervently celebrated in the famous temple of Lord Annamalaiyar in Thiruvannamalai.

Traditionally, the occasion of Masi Makam is known for a special religious event – on this day, Lord Annamalaiyar performs the thithi (annual penance and performing certain religious rites for a day in memory of the soul of the departed) for his father.

The deity of Lord Shri Annamalaiyar is taken to the place known as Pallikondappattu where the thithi will be performed for the father. The sacred event of Therthavari is performed in Naganathi. Here is the event photos.

Girivalam at Thiruvannamalai

The temple of Sri Arunachaleswarar in Thiruvannamalai is one of the most ancient temples in Tamil Nadu. It is believed to be about a 1000 years old. It has been a regular place of worship for popular Nayanmar saints such as Appar, Sambandar, Sundarar, Manickavasagar and Arunagirinathar.
The temple is a home for the Agni Lingam. Here, the Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of a Lingam and in the form of fire as one of the five elements of the universe. The temple is situated in Thiruvannamalai. Thiru means holy, Anna means powerful and Malai means hills. Devotees take Girivalam every month. Giri in Tamil means Hill and Valam means going, or coming, around. Circumambulating the hill is called Girivalam.
One round of the hill is 14 kms. Every full moon day, lakhs of devotees walk around it. As one walks around the hill, one can encounter the eight lingams positioned facing the eight directions. These are Indralingam, Agnilingam, Yamalingam, Niruthilingam, Varunalingam, Vayulingam, Kuberalingam and Esanyalingam.
While going around the hill, it is advised to do so barefooted. Devotees look upward towards the top of the hill during their journey, chanting Om Arunachala. The timings for Girivalam this month are from 10.55 am on 23rd January till 10.45 am on 24 January.
